Anybody else make a list like this for your first vehicle? How many of your criteria did you manage do get? I was lucky enough to snag all of them (except for the price, but that was optimistic from the start... c’mon, I was 17).

Kinja'd!!!

Granted it’s not an extensive list...

I had a list in a notebook somewhere in my room. All I remember is at the end of the criteria list I had a list of possibilities and one of them was an E36, so success?

I was more trying to make a longer list than anything. I wouldn’t have really cared if they were manual.

That said, I’d rather have them than not. Manual mirrors on the other hand... fuck that noise

...and well you should not. For my ally is the torque... and a powerful ally it is. Gas feeds it - makes it grow. Hooniest beings are we, not this crude pleather. You must unlearn what you have learned.

Four wheels. At least one engine.

That’s pretty much it.

Mine was

V8

2 Door

Preferably under 80K

Not a Mustang or F-body.

Picked up a 78 Olds Regency coupe with a an Olds 350 and 95K on the clock. 3 out of 4. Not bad. $800 in 1993

I really just wanted anti-lock brakes and some airbags. Compact size and large greenhouse a plus. (Turns out I got all of these things in spades.)

I didn’t have a list for my first car, I just wanted a manual and ended up with a Mazda Protege 5. For my first M3, I had a short list. It looked like this:

1. Manual - 2003.5+ if possible

2. Bright Color (Red, Laguna Seca Blue, Phoenix Yellow)

3. Around $35k

4. Hardtop

5. Competition package

I wish I still had the handwritten lists, it’s cool that you have yours!

I ended up with a 2002, Phoenix Yellow, manual, ragtop. It was 2006/7 when I bought it and I was young. So pickings were slim at my budget. I always said I would trade it for a coupe. Now that I have kept it all these years and it’s no longer my DD, I’ve embraced it’s extra weight and fabric roof. Had it out last weekend when it was nice...it always puts a smile on my face.

Manual would complete my truck. Unfortunately it never came with my engine. I never even thought about manual at this point.

Last night when this got posted I went to find a pad and the only one I could find was this one that I haven’t touched for years. Result—kind of a cool discovery.

The smile on your face... there’s something that should go on every checklist that most people just don’t think of.

Here was my list of criteria, last time i purchased a car:

cheap

runs

holds 4 passengers

doesn’t fiscally rape me in gas/repairs/insurance

bonus - not a GM product

Chances are, this is my list going forward. I wish I could afford to be more picky.

Your consistency is noted and appreciated.

I had two Chevy vehicles concurrently for awhile. Overall, they performed adequately. But the interiors were shit, and after awhile that cheapness just kinda soaked thru. The engines in both were fantastic, and stood up admirably to my ritual of abuse and neglect. It was just everything attached to the engines that was poor.

But, like they say, a GM will run poorly longer than most cars will run.

My first list was pretty much:

Fast

Manual

Not a Honda Civic

I ended up with a 2000 Firebird Trans Am WS6.

Next list I added:

No plastic

I have to say, the interior in my truck is by far the worst part of the truck. It’s so bad that it defines the truck to a lot of people. In fact, it works it’s way into what I consider the best way to sum up the Colorado.

The engineers were busy doing a fantastic job on the drivetrain and frame, the designers had created a great exterior, they were just finalizing the suspension and getting ready to do the interior when the accountants finally showed up and made them stop work on the suspension, cheap out on the interior and wouldn’t let them have more than a 4l60 because the budget was already blown.

On the other hand, the interior is so shit that it doesn’t bother me a ton what happens to it. But then again, STFUWITHTHERATTLINGANDSQUEAKINGALREADY!!!

And yeah, pretty much.

-has 4 wheels
-does only partly fall appart

- cheap

- wagon

- somewhat oldschool looking

- manual

- did I mention cheap already?

- preferably not a “boring” powertrain (not a fourbanger and/or fwd)

- very cheap

- reliable

- must be ready to tackle a mechanical abusive road trip

- sun roof would be nice

- running costs must be managable on a small budget

I’m very satisfied with my choice. It isn’t a perfect car, but it did everything I was asking for so far. And it was cheap! ;-)

-RWD

-Wagon

-Moonroof

-Modern (OBD equipped, EFI, etc)

That narrowed the list down pretty damn far. The HEMIWagon was basically the only vehicle that checked all the boxes within my budget.

It was a 91 Clio, cost 200€ at the time, with a busted transmission, was 14 years old and around 180.000 km. doesn’t get much cheaper than that for a diesel. You can’t find anything comparable today, even the shittiest car is expensive.
